Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit
Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit also known as Swarup
Kumari Nehru was born on August 18th, 1900 in Allahabad -
India. She was the daughter of Motilal Nehru and sister of Jawaharlal Nehru.
She is an Indian Political Leader and
Diplomat and one of the World’s Leading
Women in Public Life in the 20th century.
She
was married to Ranjit Sitaram Pandit in 1921, after completing her education in
India and Abroad. Her husband was arrested for supporting Indian Freedom and
later died in Lucknow Prison Jail in 1944, leaving behind his wife and 3
daughter. After the death of her husband Vijay Lakshmi Pandit entered into
politics.
She
was imprisoned for three times by British authorities in India for her support
in the Indian nationalist movement. Later, she entered municipal government in
Allahabad before entering the legislative assembly of the United Provinces.
Then she became the minister of local self-government and public health.
The
First Indian Woman to hold a Cabinet Portfolio was Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. She
also served as India’s ambassador to Mascow, to Washington and to Mexico. In
1953, She became the First Woman to be Elected President of the UN General
Assembly.
At
the age of 79 she published The Scope of Happiness: A Personal Memoir. After the death of her husband Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit stood up bold having 3
young girl children along with her and made them great novelist. She was not
alone successful in her personal life but served many young women in her political
career also.
Vijaya
Lakshmi Pandit later died at the age of 90 in Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh, India.
She was a Nobel Human and an Inspiration for many women in and around the
world.
