Indira Gandhi
Indira
Gandhi was popularly known as the Iron Lady of India across the globe. Her pure
love towards politics helped her to climb remarkable position in the Indian
Politics. And also helped her to become the first woman elected to head a
democratic country. Born & grown in a politically powerful background
helped her learn all political tricks in her early age. After the death of her
father, she becomes the central figure of the Indian National Congress Party.
She
was born to Jawaharlal Nehru - India’s first Prime Minister – and Kamla Nehru.
Her childhood wasn’t a happy one like others. Her father was mostly away from
home due to his political responsibility and her mother suffered from bouts of
illness frequently. She completed her preliminary education at home and
completed her secondary education in school. After the death of her mother, she
went to the University of Oxford in Britain to learn about history, political
science, and economics. It was unfortunate that she could not complete her
degree and return to India.
Indira
Nehru and Feroze Gandhi where childhood friends and that slowly matured into a
relationship during her study in the UK. They got married in March 1942 and
were later blessed with two baby boys named Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.
After
the death of her father in 1946, Indira Gandhi was appointed as a member of the
Rajya Shaba. With her deep knowledge of politics, she became the Prime Minister
of India in January 1966, she continued to serve the same until 1977. Operation
Blue Star changed her life as two of her Sikh bodyguards, shot her to death, to
revenge the insult. Though she was taken to the All India Institute of Medical
Sciences and was operated upon, she failed to survive and was declared dead.
To
honor and pay tribute to the great political leader, the central government
launched “Indira Awaas Yojana” under her name. The international airport at New
Delhi is named “Indira Gandhi International Airport” and the largest
universities in the world “Indira Gandhi National Open University” named after
her. Being a female in male-dominated politics she created a pathway for many
young women to walk in the political career. Her political service is always
cherished and will be cherished by every political leader.
Great Salute…!
