Sunitha Krishnan

Sunitha Krishnan is a social activist working towards rescuing, rehabilitating and reintegrating sex-trafficked victims into society. Sunitha Krishnan works in the areas of anti-human trafficking and social policy.


Sunitha Krishnan is a rape survivor and well-known for her co-founding “PRAJWALA”, an NGO fighting against human trafficking and saved more than 17,800 lived who were forced into prostitution. Born in Bangalore in 1972 to Raju Krishnan and Nalini Krishnan. She had a passion for social work and at the age of 8, she started teaching dance to mentally challenged children. By the age of 12, she was running a school in slum for underprivileged children. At the age of 15, she was gang raped by eight men.

This incident at her tendering age helped her to grow what she does today. She is trained as a medical and psychiatric social worker. Dr.Sunitha Krishnan’s parents were her major support in all phase of her life. Her journey has been long, consequential and eventful.

In 1996, sex workers living in a red-light area in Hyderabad, were evacuated. So, thousands of women, who were caught in the clutches of prostitution, were left homeless. Sunitha Krishnan along with her partner started PRAJWALA to save the life of such women. Now, PRAJWALA stands upon five pillars: prevention, rescue, rehabilitation, reintegration and advocacy.

The organization’s program operated in 17 transition centres and has helped prevent thousands of children of prostituted mothers from entering such flesh trade. Sunitha Krishnan not only leads these interventions, but has also led a rehabilitation program which trains survivors in carpentry, welding, printing, masonry and housekeeping.

She is married to Mr. Rajesh Touchriver, an Indian filmmaker, art director and scriptwriter. Along with her husband Sunitha have made several films and One of the films, “Anamika”, is now a part of the National Police Academy. Sunitha have won many awards for her courageous and exemplary work.
