Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla, an Indian-American astronaut and the first Indian Woman in space. A role model for many young women in and around the world. Kalpana’s achievement will always be remembered and cherished in space. It was not easy for a small girl child from Karnal to join NASA and fly in the air.



Kalpana Chawla had a dream to reach sky from her childhood. After finishing her schooling in Punjab and completed to her college in Chandigarh. She moved to the US in 1982 and completed her Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering and the doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado.

In 1997, her dreams and the way she pursued it was alive. She became the first Indian-born woman and the Second Indian to fly in Space. In 2000, again Kalpana was selected for her second flight as a part of the crew in STD-107. But her second flight was her last.

Kalpana Chawla recorded 30 days, 14 hours and 54 minutes in space over the course of 2 missions. One of the biggest inspiration of Space for all young girls who wanted to fly in space. Her journey of success was not easy, but her passion was bigger than her struggle.
